Biography:

Dr. Bakkes, a Family Physician since 2001, enjoys seeing new places and spent several years working as a travelling doctor in locations as varied as Kotzebue, Antarctica, and New Zealand, before coming to Sitka as a traveler in 2007, falling in love with Southeast, and never leaving. She enjoys spending time with her family in the outdoors, including hiking, camping, boating, and flying. She is a member of the Southeast Alaska Airmen's Association.

She grew up in California, graduated from Princeton University in 1991, graduated with both an MD and an MPH from Tulane University in 1998, and completed her Family Practice Residency at the Maine-Dartmouth program in Augusta, ME, in 2001. She enjoys being a Family Practice physician because it allows her to care for the whole family as well as the whole person.
