Sitka Community Hospital - Old Diagnostic Imaging Team Donates $30,000 to Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society
SITKA, Alaska, December 3, 2018: Sitka Community Hospital - Old's Diagnostic Imaging Department donated $30,000 to the Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society in conjunction with Allen Marine, Harry Race, White's Pharmacy, and Russell's.
"We want the funds to go to our community, and we know the Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society does great work," said Amy Martens, Sitka Community Hospital - Old mammographer.
The majority of the money was raised from the Diagnostic Imaging Department's annual Hope Floats Cruise fundraising efforts from 2008 to 2016. In late 2007, Natalie Allen approached the Department with the idea to use a boat for a fundraiser cruise, and after months of planning, Hope Floats was born.
Each October, the Diagnostic Imaging Department worked to sell tickets and contact local organizations for donations toward door prizes and goodie bags. Allen Marine donated a tour boat and crew for an afternoon trip. These contributions with the graciously donated baked goods from community members made this cruise a yearly success.
Diagnostic Imaging Department staff with Natalie Allen decorated the boat and ran activities during the tour including silent auctions, dessert auctions, and t-shirt sales.
The funds raised by these cruises were primarily put toward a Breast Scholarship Fund at Sitka Community Hospital - Old. Ronda Anderson, then manager of the Diagnostic Imaging Department, came up with the scholarship idea for uninsured and underinsured women in the community potentially avoiding their health exam due to expense. With better coverage for women today, the funds have become underutilized.
The Diagnostic Imaging Department decided to donate some of the money to organizations within the community with missions similar to their own, including the Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society.
The Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society funded the Path of Hope and has plans to make improvements to the path in the near future. The organization also provides support for patients and donates $500 to any resident with cancer to help offset their expenses through their own mini grant program.
"It can be difficult to find some of the opportunities and grants offered to cancer patients by organizations in larger cities, and that's one reason the Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society exists," said Susan Suarez, President. "All the money raised and donated to the Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society goes right back into the community. It's important that we are helping locals."
Any Sitkans diagnosed with cancer are eligible for the mini grant and can obtain an application from one of the group's board members, including Candi Barger at Sitka Realty. Residents may also inquire at the either of the hospitals in town.
The Diagnostic Imaging Department presented a $30,000 check to Susan Suarez, President of Sitka Cancer Survivor's Society and Carolyn Fredrickson, Publicity Board Member. Shown left to right are Amanda Johnson, Ronda Anderson, Natalie Allen, Carolyn Fredrickson, Susan Suarez, Amy Martens, and Cara Lawrie.

Employee of Quarter
November 1, 2018 Bottom Line- Chris is amazing! She shows all the values consistently on a daily basis. She can talk to irate patients and have them feeling better in no time. She goes out of her way to make each one feel important and valued. She shows respect and compassion to both patients and coworkers and is an excellent listener. Several times this past year our manager has been out of town and Chris has shouldered greater responsibility and demands without ceasing to be kind. She has been willing to make difficult decisions and looks out for others concerns as well as her own. She is definitely a team player- not just in the PFS department but with other departments in the hospital as well. I have always been impressed with her level of commitment to her job and our department and has been an excellent role model … Chris is very well deserving of this honor."
"Chris is an outstanding co-worker, her hard work and dedication too. She has been very helpful to her co-workers especially when the boss is away. She is also helpful to other departments in the hospital. I can't describe her enough, but she deserves to be given a recognition from the hospital

October 22, 2018Sitka Community Hospital - Old Wins Statewide Quality Award for Long Term Care
SITKA, Alaska, October 22, 2018: Sitka Community Hospital - Old Long Term Care was one of five facilities in Alaska awarded the Recognition of Quality Achievement Award in the 2018 Nursing Home Quality Awards.
"We think of our Long Term Care as a home, a place where visits by families and children are encouraged and where friendships develop among staff and residents," said Kay C. Turner, PT, DPT, CNHA, Long Term Care Administrator. "The strength of our facility is our staff. Our entire team is warm, loving and truly cares about our residents. Every effort is made to help each resident reach their highest level of function and independence. It is an honor to receive this award as it is a direct reflection on the care provided by our staff."
Sitka Community Hospital - Old and Long Term Care participated in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) National Nursing Home Quality Care Collaborative (NNHQCC)
through Mountain-Pacific Quality Health. The NNHQCC's goals are to instill quality and performance improvement practices, eliminate healthcare-acquired conditions and improve resident satisfaction. As a measure to reflect achievement of these goals, CMS created a composite score system. The composite score is a way to assess quality of care in longterm care facilities and is based on 13 publicly reported quality measures-the lower the score, the better.
The awards are based on each facility's composite score, their licensure with Alaska's state survey agency and their certification with CMS. Facilities who received the Recognition of Quality Achievement Award, including Sitka Community Hospital - Old, earned a 7.0 percent or less at least once during 2017.
"Every one of these facilities demonstrated a true dedication and commitment to deliver highquality care to their residents and families," said Sharon Scudder, Mountain-Pacific's Alaska director, of the 2018 award winners. "Mountain Pacific is honored to partner with Alaska's longterm care facilities to promote quality, compassionate care."
Awards were presented on September 27, 2018 in Girdwood during the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association's Annual Conference. Sitka Community Hospital - Old CNAs with Rob Allen, CEO; Dr. Hunter, Medical Director (not pictured); Lorraine Daly, Director of Nursing; and Kay Turner, Long Term Care Administrator were recognized by the Sitka Assembly at their meeting on October 9, 2018

Commuting Sitka on foot or bike is good for the environment and you too! It is important to make sure you are safe, especially while traveling at night.Pedestrians, including people who travel by foot, wheelchair, stroller, or bicycle are among the most vulnerable users of our roads. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in the next 24 hours, on average, 445 people in the U.S. will be treated in an emergency department for traffic-related pedestrian injuries. In 2012 alone 76,000 people were injured.

May 17, 2017 - Each day in the United States, over 8 people are killed and 1,161 injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver. Distracted driving is broken down into three main types of distraction; visual, manual and cognitive. Visual is taking your eyes off the road, manual is classified as taking your hands off the wheel and cognitive as taking your mind off the act of driving.Talking on the phone, using a navigation system and texting are all examples of distracted driving. Texting while driving combines all three classifications of distraction, making it the most dangerous. In 2016, over 330,000 accidents were caused by a driver that was texting.
On May 26th, 2016 Sitka banned the use of cellphones while driving in hopes of reducing distracted driving accidents and making the roads safer. This ordinance was successful, distracted driving rates have fallen by 50%.
Sitka Community Hospital - Old would like to thank the citizens of Sitka for making the roads safer by putting their phones away. Join us in continuing this trend by not using your phone while driving, it can wait!
